If you've been perusing our website for any length of time, you'll have noticed that we have a range of coffees that are named after mythical creatures. We thought we would do a short series introducing each creature's background and why we chose them for our coffee.
This week, we'll start with the Chimera which is featured in our "That Autumn Feeling" Collection.
The Chimera is a creature in Greek mythology composed of different animal parts. It is commonly depicted as a lion with a goat's head protruding from its back as well as the tail having a snake's head at the end. It can also breathe fire and according to the mythology it is the sibling of Cerberus (another one of our coffees).
Unfortunately, the Chimera was not looked upon favourably by the ancient Greeks - described as "a bane to many men" - the hero Bellerophon was ordered by the King of Lycia (southwest Turkey in modern times) to slay the Chimera. He wasn't supposed to survive the encounter, but with the help of Pegasus (woops there's another coffee - Greek mythology has some great creatures okay!) they managed to defeat the Chimera.
So why did we choose the Chimera to represent what used to be our Continental Medium blend?
Being one of our darker roasts, a fire breathing creature is perfect to showcase this and since it's a blend of different origin beans we think the Chimera being a hybrid creature is a better fit to represent a blend, than say a dragon.
Our Chimera blend coffee is available on our website here and is a favourite amongst those looking for a stronger kick with their coffee.
